As we remember the people who died on 9/11, we wanted to share a few thoughts of faith from members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who lost loved ones or who were personally involved in that fateful day.

Read a story about Liz Howell, wife of Brady Howell who at age 26 lost his life in the attack on the Pentagon. Just this past January, Liz went to Haiti as a nurse to help those affected by the earthquake. [Read an article that tells of one of her experiences in Haiti.]

Liz still mourns her loss, saying, “There’s a scripture [Doctrine and Covenants 18:10] that says the worth of a soul is great in the eyes of God…. “I really grew to understand what that meant with the loss of my husband, just how great a loss it is.” But she has faced that loss with courage, faith, and compassion.

At age 30, she decided to serve as a missionary for the Mormon Church. She now works full-time for LDS Humanitarian Services. She’s taking that understanding that every soul is precious and trying to make a difference in the lives of others, one by one. Liz says: “When you’re of service, you lose yourself….All of a sudden, your trials don’t seem nearly as big because everybody else is going through something. It puts it in perspective, and it’s very, very healing.”

Read thoughts from some of the loved ones of Mormons who died in the attacks. This news story notes that the common threads in interviews with these family members included two things — a deep appreciation for the Atonement of Jesus Christ, and an absence of hate for the people who were responsible for the attacks.

Thoughts of faith included the following:

I do know that we are strengthened through our trials . . . as I look back at this past year, my spiritual growth has been enormous. Through my pain, I have joy. ~Maryann Wahlstrom

The gospel gave us an anchor at that time in our lives when no one had any answers and the process was wait and wait and wait [for information on recovery efforts at the Pentagon]. ~Jeanette Howell
