~by Michelle

This is how I saw someone describe the Semiannual Worldwide General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints [forgive the U.S.-centric sports reference]: “It’s like the Super Bowl but all about God’s love.” [The fact that we sometimes gather in our homes with some favorite foods might have something to do with the reference.]

Another way to say it is that General Conference is a big deal for members of The Church of Jesus Christ. But, of course, the food that matters most is the nourishment we seek for our souls. And the millions of people gathering to watch around the world is about learning about how Christ has already won. He’s conquered everything that we may face in life. And He understands it all.

Wordle of a past year’s General Conference

Back in ancient days, the church (of ancient-day saints) had leaders like Peter, James, John, Paul…those called by Jesus to preach of Him be witnesses of Him and to invite people to follow Him and to align their lives with His ways. To find His love and peace. In the latter-day church, we have apostles and prophets as well. They, along with other general-level leaders of our faith (men and women) speak over the course of two days about Jesus, about how His church came to be restored to the earth, and how we can seek to align our lives more fully to follow Jesus and to let Him help us and bring more peace and strength to our lives. (You can watch some highlight videos from previous conferences that feature parts of talks from apostles at the General Conference YouTube channel.)

When my children were young, we’d set up tents in our family room (that idea points to another ancient story, this one in the Book of Mormon, where families turned their tents toward the temple and the prophet). We’d gather some of our favorite snacks, print out papers that they could color or mark as different leaders spoke, and try to make it memorable. [This photo is from years ago, when our site was called MormonWoman.org].

My children are all adults now, but I love thinking about the fact that we’ll be all experiencing this conference wherever we are, so we are coming together along with our worldwide Church family, millions strong! One of the things that amazes me about General Conference is that millions of people watch the same talks, and millions of people also come to General Conference seeking personal inspiration as we engage in the talks. General Conference is not just about what we hear, but about what we experience in our desires to be guided by God in our individual lives.

As has been the case since the pandemic hit, General Conference this weekend will only be broadcast online. Pre-pandemic, the Conference Center in Salt Lake City would be packed with 22,000 people inside plus the international broadcast.

There are myriad ways to watch or listen to the five different sessions of the conference that will be held over the course of two days (October 2-3, 2021).

Sessions will be held at 10:00 a.m. MDT and 2:00 p.m. MDT on both Saturday and Sunday, and there is also an evening session on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. MDT.

Following are some of the options for watching or listening to the livestream. (Video archives of the conference are also available almost immediately at ChurchofJesusChrist.org and text is usually online a couple of days after the conference is completed).

Watch the livestream at the broadcast page at ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
The Women’s Session of the October 2020 General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was such a power- and peace-filled meeting. The recording of this session will be available soon, but until then, here are some summaries of the reassuring, empowering, and soothing messages that were given to women all over the world.

The messages given through authorized servants of Jesus Christ can be as though He is speaking to us. As I listened, I felt His love and desire to help, lift, bless, and heal, and to magnify my desires and efforts to follow Him.

Our Heavenly Parents know us. They is aware of us. They is there to help us. They believe in us, Their daughters. and appreciates the efforts we make to build faith in Jesus Christ in ourselves and others, and seek to extend His love to others as a way to bring light and change to the world.

In [a few hours], I will be hearing the most comforting, true, hopeful, inspiring, and meaningful messages I hear all year. I’ve seen extraordinary TED talks and heard beautiful speeches from influential people before but nothing reaches me at my very center like this meeting. The LDS General Conference live broadcast will be aired from Salt Lake City all over the world. The purpose? To speak to members and nonmembers alike and share with them messages of hope, to give them faith and strength to keep going, to teach them how to be the best people they can be, and to testify of the divinity of Jesus Christ. Isn’t being more kind, more helpful, more aware of others, more loving toward humanity, and more influential people for good something we all want? Find a Mormon friend and let them tell you where and how and when you can hear these types of messages and encouragement. You’ll get whatever it is your heart is needing right now and you won’t regret it. That’s a promise.

This weekend the semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will continue (as was noted last week, it began with the General Women’s Meeting that was held last weekend). The five remaining sessions will be broadcast worldwide (in about eight dozen languages) from the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

General Conference is a special time for members of The Church of Jesus Christ. One of the beliefs of our church is that just as in ancient times, God has called prophets and apostles to help teach people about the Savior and to help people come to Christ through doctrine and priesthood ordinances.

We also have other general church leaders who speak, such as members of the Quorums of Seventy and auxiliary leaders (Relief Society [women’s organization], Sunday School, Young Men, Young Women).

You can participate in the conference in multiple ways. Sessions are held at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, and the priesthood session (for men) is held on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. (All times shown are Mountain Time.)

Following are viewing options (from the Church’s How to View Live page)

The General Women’s Meeting of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was a powerful, inspirational meeting, bringing women, young women, and girls ages eight and above together throughout the world. This meeting begins the worldwide General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ that is held every six months.

I watched the worldwide sisters’ meeting with several young women. I asked them what they enjoyed about the meeting and they all replied that they loved President Uchtdorf’s talk about God’s love (one mentioned loving his comments about how it doesn’t matter how many followers you have on Instagram or Pinterest). They felt that similar message about God’s love in Sister Marriott’s talk. One mentioned Sister Stevens’ story about her parents. A couple of them just said, “We loved the whole meeting!” They also said it felt very short…time did go by quickly.

I thought the video capturing thoughts from women, young women and girls from around the world was about the best video I’ve ever seen in one of these meetings. I really loved the music from the choir, and to see the radiant girls with their mothers worshiping and sharing their faith in this way.

I felt the Spirit of God strongly throughout the meeting.

Other things that I’m seeing on social media that stood out to people:

– The opening prayer by a member of the Young Women board who lives in South Africa.

– The Korean children’s choir!

– We are an international church, and this meeting felt to many to represent that reality well.

– The idea to memorize The Living Christ, as 900 young women in Alaska did. (One of the young women in our little group shared that her family had done this as a family challenge — even her six- and four-year-old siblings participated and can recite much if not most of the inspired prophetic document.)

– The power of covenants and the temple and family history. [If you haven’t had a chance to read the October New Era, it is focused on family history and the temple and is very powerful.]

– The Lord knows us individually. Covenants are given one by one.

– The theme of light, and that temples (both the buildings and we as followers of Christ, temples of God in our own right) can push back darkness

– Making visiting teaching more than a checklist item

– Sister Marriott’s openness about personal revelation in the temple about her weaknesses

– Hearing women and children share in their native languages what the temple means to them

– That worth is not tied to appearance or popularity

– Children can have influence in their homes

– Rain and umbrellas will never mean quite the same thing again after President Uchtdorf’s talk

– Sister Marriott’s awesome Southern accent. 🙂

You can read highlight quotes on the hashtag #womensmeeting on Twitter (#ldsconf also captures many of the quotes).

What from the meeting stood out to you?

Last night, my husband’s family gathered in the evening so the men and young men in the family could attend priesthood session of General Conference together. The women (and young boys) of the family enjoyed our tradition of a dinner cooked by Favorite Aunt Chris. We often will do a movie, but this time Chris had provided an activity for us all. It’s an awesome tradition that we all love.

When “the boys” got home from priesthood session, they ate and we all enjoyed some dessert and then many of us gathered around the television to watch the excitement of the Final Four game between Kentucky and Wisconsin. It was fun to be able to enjoy both spiritual stuff and some fun stuff together.

Now as I’m decompressing from the awesomeness that is General Conference and family traditions around Conference, I took a look at the trends on Twitter. A few minutes ago, six of the top ten Twitter trends (one of which is a promoted hashtag) had something to do with General Conference. #FinalFour was up there, too.

#ldsconf
#ElderOaks
#priesthoodsession
#PresMonson
#FinalFour
President Monson
Priesthood

And now, #ElderOaks and #priesthoodsession are bookending #finalfour.

Twitter reflects the two things that made up our day memorable!

Kinda fun.

How do you start an article with the hopes of paying proper tribute to a woman who has literally changed your life? A woman who traveled the world over, ministering to “the one,” while bringing millions closer to Jesus Christ? Well, let me begin by telling you a little bit about this remarkable woman leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes called the “Mormon Church” by friends of other faiths).

Sister Elaine S. Dalton was married to her sweetheart, Stephen E. Dalton, in the Salt Lake Temple. She is the mother of 6 beautiful children (5 sons, 1 daughter), and is the the grandmother of 16 (and counting). She received a bachelor’s degree in English at Brigham Young University. She loves to run (and has tackled 18 marathons!), hike, dance with her granddaughters, and read (especially the scriptures). She also makes great chocolate chip cookies. She can be found lifting others spirits wherever she goes. She is truly a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. Also, in her “spare time,” for the past 15 years she has served in the general Young Women’s program (an auxiliary program that includes all Mormon women ages 12-18, that has the purpose of bringing these girls closer to Christ) in different lay positions (non-paid). In 1998 she was called as a board member, in 2002 as a counselor in the presidency, and then in 2008 as the president. On the 6th of April, 2013, she was honorably released from her calling as Young Women General President. Her efforts in the general program will go down in history for all eternity.

Have you ever met somebody that makes you want to be your best self?

Sister Elaine S. Dalton indeed has a unique way of teaching millions, while focusing on “the one” — just as the Savior did during his earthly ministry. I have personally seen this “in action” in my own life, and in the lives of many others. She really believes what she teaches that “one virtuous young woman, led by the Spirit, can change the world.” [1] You can tell by the way she talks to everyone she meets.

Such was the case when I had the privilege of meeting Sister Dalton a little over five years ago. Because of her belief in me, I have gained greater trust in the Lord, and have tried to become a better person in every aspect of my life. Physically, I started exercising more and have since run 3 marathons; and spiritually I have drawn closer to Jesus Christ in ways that I didn’t know were possible.

Once I changed, I had the desire to help others change as well and was able to start an organization called “Voices for Virtue” which now has over 138,000 members.

My story is just one of many. Elaine Dalton knows that if you desire to do the work of God, He will qualify you for the work. She serves in a way that invites everyone she meets to have the desire to serve God.

Elaine Dalton really is a woman of God and has “run… the race that [was] set before [her]” (Holy Bible, Hebrews 12:1). She has found success by following the prescription that the Mormon apostle, Elder D. Todd Christofferson, said, “True success in this life comes in consecrating our lives—that is, our time and choices—to God’s purposes (see John 17:1, 4; Doctrine and Covenants 19:19). In so doing, we permit Him to raise us to our highest destiny.” [2] I believe wholeheartedly that her service in the Young Women’s program is just a stepping stool for even greater things to come. Sister Dalton has changed the world, and she will continue to do so, because it is in her spiritual DNA.
