Mormons, Methodists and Catholics Join Forces to Fight Hunger

Women Seeking Christ — Thu, 26 Apr 2012 14:07:17 +0000

Editor’s note: My heart rejoices when people of various walks of life and different faiths can join hands in doing good to serve our Heavenly Father’s children. Kudos to the people in the Murrieta area in California who did just that. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined Methodists and Catholics in an effort to help fight hunger. I believe the world needs more of these kinds of efforts!

Mormon Helping Hands: Serving in Our Communities

Women Seeking Christ — Wed, 07 Sep 2011 15:45:34 +0000

Over the past couple of days, we’ve talked about visiting teaching — a program within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to encourage Latter-day Saint women care for and serve one another and strengthen each other spiritually.

But for Mormons, service is not something we just do for each other within our own faith. One of the ways we seek to serve others is through the Mormon Helping Hands program.

Perhaps you have seen people wearing yellow jackets or T-shirts, working in their communities. Sometimes they appear after a disaster like the tsumani in Japan or Hurricane Katrina or the devastation in Joplin, MO.

Other times, they plan community service efforts to help with ongoing needs in their communities, such as with service activities organized in California this past spring, or efforts last month in 40 countries in Africa such as “Madagascar, Reunion and Mauritius in celebration of the 5th Annual All Africa Mormon Helping Hands day Saturday, 20 August 2011.”

The LDS Newsroom article talking about Mormon Helping Hands’ service in Africa explains simply what MHH is:

Mormon Helping Hands is a worldwide program where Latter-day Saints reach out in their communities to give service and help those in need.

We as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe strongly in the admonition of the Savior, Jesus Christ, to love and serve those around us. Mormon Helping Hands is one way Latter-day Saints seek to follow His example and His commandments.

Since we have had a sort of theme going this week of humanitarian and charitable service this week, we thought we’d link to a few other stories about Mormon women reaching out to help relieve suffering and to serve others. Some of these are older stories, but they are inspirational all the same.

We also want to be clear that we know that Mormon women are not the only people who care about service. We are inspired by so many in and out of the Church who are motivated purely by love to help those who are less fortunate than they are, and to make the world a better place. Thank you to all of you who give of yourselves and your time to serve God’s children all over the world. If we all do a little, we can make a big difference!

In fact, the first featured story is about Muslim and Mormon women working together — and building friendships — as they serve, side by side.

And here are a few other stories:

BYU Women’s Conference “Virtual Sharing Stations”

Women Seeking Christ — Sun, 04 May 2008 06:49:25 +0000

BYU just held its annual Women’s Conference (co-sponsored by the Relief Society organization of the Church). One of the hallmark activities at the conference is the service project. During this time, they also have different stations, called virtual sharing stations, described as “ideas that are available on serving, teaching, and helping one another in our homes, schools, communities, and church callings.” They don’t have this year’s Virtual Sharing Stations available yet, but we thought we would link to last year’s stations, to see what kinds of ideas have been discussed, and to whet your appetite for what is to come! See other years’ ideas as well here. These links include pictures of the display booth, as well as any handouts that were available! Note the varied topics. This is a great way to find out more about what Mormon women think and do, and to learn from and with them…and maybe find a few ideas for yourself.
