This is how I saw someone describe the Semiannual Worldwide General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints [forgive the U.S.-centric sports reference]: “It’s like the Super Bowl but all about God’s love.” [The fact that we sometimes gather in our homes with some favorite foods might have something to do with the reference.]

Another way to say it is that General Conference is a big deal for members of The Church of Jesus Christ. But, of course, the food that matters most is the nourishment we seek for our souls. And the millions of people gathering to watch around the world is about learning about how Christ has already won. He’s conquered everything that we may face in life. And He understands it all.

Back in ancient days, the church (of ancient-day saints) had leaders like Peter, James, John, Paul…those called by Jesus to preach of Him be witnesses of Him and to invite people to follow Him and to align their lives with His ways. To find His love and peace. In the latter-day church, we have apostles and prophets as well. They, along with other general-level leaders of our faith (men and women) speak over the course of two days about Jesus, about how His church came to be restored to the earth, and how we can seek to align our lives more fully to follow Jesus and to let Him help us and bring more peace and strength to our lives. (You can watch some highlight videos from previous conferences that feature parts of talks from apostles at the General Conference YouTube channel.)

When my children were young, we’d set up tents in our family room (that idea points to another ancient story, this one in the Book of Mormon, where families turned their tents toward the temple and the prophet). We’d gather some of our favorite snacks, print out papers that they could color or mark as different leaders spoke, and try to make it memorable. My children are all adults now, but I love thinking about the fact that we’ll be all experiencing this conference wherever we are, so we are coming together along with our worldwide Church family, millions strong! One of the things that amazes me about General Conference is that millions of people watch the same talks, and millions of people also come to General Conference seeking personal inspiration as we engage in the talks. General Conference is not just about what we hear, but about what we experience in our desires to be guided by God in our individual lives.

As has been the case since the pandemic hit, General Conference this weekend will only be broadcast online. Pre-pandemic, the Conference Center in Salt Lake City would be packed with 22,000 people inside plus the international broadcast.

There are myriad ways to watch or listen to the five different sessions of the conference that will be held over the course of two days (October 2-3, 2021).

Sessions will be held at 10:00 a.m. MDT and 2:00 p.m. MDT on both Saturday and Sunday, and there is also an evening session on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. MDT.

Following are some of the options for watching or listening to the livestream. (Video archives of the conference are also available almost immediately at ChurchofJesusChrist.org and text is usually online a couple of days after the conference is completed).

Watch the livestream at the broadcast page at ChurchofJesusChrist.org. Livestreams at the Church’s page will be available in 70 different languages.
The livestream will be available in over 30 different languages at the Church’s YouTube channel.

On May 1, 2020, the annual BYU Women’s Conference was broadcast as a virtual/digital event, for the first time in its history. From what we hear, it reached more women than ever.

“A Rush of Revelation”

– Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, April 1, 2018

What an amazing “rush of revelation” members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints experienced this weekend! As I listened to Elder Holland also say, “What a prophet!” my heart felt like it would burst.

After the conference sessions were over, my husband said something like, “We’re going to need to work to keep up with President Nelson!”

(For those not of our faith, he’s 93, but you would never know. Not only is he physically strong (one of the leaders quipped that they are just trying to keep President Nelson off the ski slopes); he also is already proving to be a visionary, action-oriented leader.)

But my husband’s thoughts went deeper than that. I felt like his words were inspired, and so I can’t paraphrase them well, but the idea was that President Nelson is ready to help lead us through more of the hastening work — but our willingness to respond to his inspired leadership is what will allow him to keep receiving the inspiration necessary to press this work forward.

I was reminded of what was mentioned again in this conference — that when President Monson urged us last year to read the Book of Mormon, President Nelson was immediately and specifically responsive. He modeled what he now needs us to do as prophet. It’s up to us to help hasten the work.

We’ve been called to minister like never before, with a unity like never before — between men and women, between adults and youth, between leaders and members, between heaven and earth.

In this conference, we were also reminded, yet again, that the tumultuous times of the last days will require our own spiritual centeredness like never before. There is and will continue to be a lot of opposition in our individual and our collective lives. We will need the anchor of a personal connection with God and deeply-rooted personal experience communicating with Him and leaning on Him.

There are amazing things happening. It was a gift to participate in General Conference this weekend. What a blessing to participate in the solemn assembly, to sustain two new apostles and other leaders, to hear of the changes that came to priesthood quorums and home and visiting teaching (read the FAQ here) to hear the announcement of seven more temples.

And there are amazing things ahead. President Nelson and others reminded us that we are preparing for the Savior’s Second Coming! We are engaged in a work that is wonderful, powerful, and eternal.

General Conference weekend! #ldsconf

It’s a special weekend for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Every six months (the first weekend of April and October), Mormons gather virtually and in person to listen to our prophet and apostles and other general leaders of the Church in General Conference. General Conference consists of four two-hour general sessions (two on Saturday and two on Sunday) and an evening session on Saturday night (one for boys and men 12 and older in April and one for girls and women 8 and older in October).

For those who aren’t members of the Church, General Conference can give you an idea of basic beliefs and standards that matter to us as Mormons.

For those who are members of the Church, this is a time to reflect on our beliefs and renew our commitment to our standards. It’s also a time where we seek personal guidance for our individual lives.

How can a few talks over a couple of days have such a personal impact on millions of people? We believe in personal revelation, meaning that we can get personalized answers for our lives directly from God. It’s always interesting to me to see what kinds of things will stick out to people as they listen and consider the counsel and teachings shared in General Conference.

I love this quote from Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, one of the twelve apostles.

We who are General Authorities and general officers are called to teach His general rules. You and we then lead specific lives and must seek the Lord’s guidance regarding specific circumstances. But there would be mass confusion and loss of gospel promises if no general ideal and no doctrinal standard were established and, in our case today, repeated.

You can expect to hear a lot about general concepts and commandments and principles in General Conference. We at Mormon Women also encourage listeners to seek God’s help for specific circumstances, both during Conference sessions and also in weeks and months to come as you ponder the messages given. (How many times have I heard a talk and not necessarily connected with it in the moment but then found deep personal insight as I studied the talk later?)

Here’s another quote that celebrates this opportunity for us to get personal guidance about our lives. The quote is from Elder Richard G. Scott who was an apostle for many years before his death in 2015.

Throughout the ages, many have obtained guidance helpful to resolve challenges in their lives by following the example of respected individuals who resolved similar problems. Today, world conditions change so rapidly that such a course of action is often not available to us.

Personally, I rejoice in that reality because it creates a condition where we, of necessity, are more dependent upon the Spirit to guide us through the vicissitudes of life. Therefore, we are led to seek personal inspiration in life’s important decisions.

I am grateful to know that we worship a God who both cares about guiding us collectively and who also knows us individually and will guide us in very personal ways.

God bless us all this weekend and beyond as we ponder the words of the prophets. We welcome any who are not of our faith to join us to learn more about our faith.

This General Conference will also be special because we will have what is called a solemn assembly to sustain our new prophet, President Russell M. Nelson. Two new apostles will also be called to replace those who have passed away.

Mormon Women leaders speak #byuwc

We recently had a comment from an LDS woman (made after General Conference) craving opportunities to hear more from our newly called Relief Society General Presidency.

I’m happy to share several links to recent addresses from our new Relief Society leaders!

In my opinion, one of the most under-celebrated events of the Relief Society — the worldwide Mormon women’s organization — was just held for two days this past week. BYU Women’s Conference is hosted by Brigham Young University, but is c0-sponsored by the Relief Society. Every year thousands of LDS women swarm the beautiful campus for two full days of general sessions, breakout classes, and significant service opportunities. I’ve attended this conference multiple times in the past, and there is a power at the conference that is amazing. I wish there was a way for more people to physically attend, but there is a way to virtually connect with some of what has happened.

Members of our new Relief Society General Presidency spoke on a couple of occasions during the BYU Women’s Conference. Sister Jean B. Bingham gave inspiring opening remarks to kick off the conference, before Sister Sharon Eubank’s powerful keynote address, and each presidency member spoke in a joint session.

In the coming weeks, other talks by faithful LDS women and men will be made available via the transcripts link at the BYU Women’s Conference site, but I’m thrilled to report that the talks given by our General Relief Society leaders are available for viewing now!

I’ll provide links to the various websites/pages below, but for ease, I’m also including direct links and embedding videos.

At LDS.org under the Broadcasts section, within the sidebar tab/section entitled “BYU Women’s Conference.” Right now, Sister Eubank’s keynote address is the only talk available. I’m sure that will change in short order.
On Mormon Channel’s YouTube channel. I’ve embedded the videos below. Sister Sharon Eubank (new first counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency) was the opening keynote speaker of the BYU Women’s Conference, and Sister Jean B. Bingham (Relief Society General President) gave some opening remarks before the keynote. For whatever reason, the YouTube version right now has a loooong segment of Mormon Tabernacle Choir music (lovely music, but makes the video very looooong). You can find the beginning of the remarks (starting with Sister Bingham) at about the 1:15 mark (that is one hour and 15 minutes).

The Relief Society General Presidency also each spoke at another session of the conference. Again, scrub to about 1:04 (that’s one hour and 4 minutes) to get to the beginning of their talks.

In time, talks from BYU Women’s Conference will also be available at BYUtv.

Messages about love, light, building on the simple foundation of the gospel plan and principles, faith not fear, and staying centered in Christ are some of the messages rolling around in my mind and heart. After hearing President Monson talk about the Book of Mormon, we started the book over as a family. I’m more committed to focusing on the good in the world and using social media in that positive way.

It was also exciting to hear about five new temples announced.
