~by Sue

Editor’s note: Since I also struggle with health problems, I appreciated reading some of Sue’s thoughts on trying to face them with faith rather than with self-pity. You’ll want to read the whole post to get the quote and the context, but here’s a snippet from her reflections. Her post makes me think about the woman with the issue of blood, and the different ways those of us who struggle with health issues might reach out to touch the Savior’s garment, as it were, to access His healing, helping power. We may not always have our trials removed, but His power can give us strength to face the challenges in our lives.

Elder Groberg’s words [see her post] made me realize that I’ve been coming at my health problems from the wrong angle. My approach has been reactive, struggling not to wallow because it feels bad. Instead, I could take a proactive stance, striving for selflessness (and the spiritual gifts, healing, and lack of wallowing that must always accompany any Christ-centered trait). Let’s face it; striving trumpsstruggling every time. It just feels better. Which is why I think I will [block]1[/block] better with a mindset of actively pursuing selflessness as the cure for what ails me rather than reactively flailing against the quagmire of sinking feelings that all too often accompanies chronic health problems. Reframing is a good thing!

– – – – – –

“Healing blessings come in many ways, each suited to our individual needs, as known to Him who loves us best. Sometimes a ‘healing’ cures our illness or lifts our burden. But sometimes we are “healed” by being given strength or understanding or patience to bear the burdens placed upon us.” – Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “He Heals the Heavy Laden“

At Activity Days, our group is focusing on the Faith in God program. We as leaders (there are two of us) work with the girls to plan activities that correspond with different facets of the Faith in God program, including Learning and Living the Gospel, Serving Others, and Developing Talents.

Last week, we focused on the following activity option:

Read D&C 89. Discuss how Heavenly Father blesses us when we faithfully live the Word of Wisdom. Help plan and conduct an activity to teach the Word of Wisdom to others.

We decided to use the internet to share more about the Word of Wisdom with others. We worked together around my kitchen table to create a presentation on Google docs.

So, what is the Word of Wisdom? I’ll let the girls answer that question.

(They liked using the acronym W.O.W. so we helped them frame a subtitle around that.)

No one wants to think about the possibility of the recent swine flu outbreak turning into a pandemic, but a well-known scripture is one we use often as Mormons: If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear. Preparation can help in times of uncertainty, even fear.

We thought we would pass along helpful information (a series of fact sheets) about preparing for a pandemic as provided on the Church’s emergency preparedness section of its Provident Living website. There’s much else on these sites that can help with general preparedness as well.

A powerful but relatively simple piece of advice that is often shared is to have a supply of food, medicine, and other necessities on hand (at least a couple of weeks’ worth, if not more) in case you are unable to get to a store (or stores are unable to provide what you need). Even a stressful period in one’s personal life could make such a supply helpful.

We live in wonderful, but also uncertain, times. Let’s not panic, but let’s try to be prepared.

(For your convenience, we have included the pandemin preparedness fact sheets from the website below.)
