I try not to look at the past of the church but instead the present. From my experience Mormons are the happiest and most ethical people I know.

I wrestled with polygamy. It’s part of our refining process, which includes different doctrine for different people. Everybody has a secret sorrow about some doctrine at one point or another, but it is only an opportunity to turn toward God and learn to know more about Him.

I studied polygamy for a long time off and on, in what I think is the correct way. I pleaded with the Lord to teach me all along the way, and I studied the correct material–scriptures, temple, first hand writings, words of prophets and apostles, and more. It is a long personal quest of learning, truly a “wrestle” that can’t be answered in a few sentences. It takes patience, understanding that our own personal develop may not be “there” yet, and giving it time.

I learned that we don’t have to be afraid of anything in the Church, if we truly want to know what God will teach and not man. I have peace and comfort, and understand that my exhaltation doesn’t depend on plural marriage.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this subject. Most of all, for the insights about inspiration and personal revelation. I have been trying to find the words to explain how I feel about my testimony of Joseph Smith and you
have supplied them. Thank you. As a decedent of several ancestors who practiced polygamy, I have never had
a problem with the practice if it was directed from above. I am grateful that we do not practice in our time.
but I would probably not be here if it had not been directed in the early days of the church. My testimony of Joseph
Smith is even stronger because he did not want to take other wives but was obedient and submitted to the Lord’s will.
You are right, if we only apply Joseph’s history on marriage to our day, we would be confused and upset.

Thanks you so much for sharing your thoughts on this timely topic. Through the years I have had discussions on this and finally came to total peace by studying the life of the Prophet Joseph Smith. This strengthened my own testimony of him and I know he is a true prophet. My earnest prayers were answered with a strong confirmation of his divine mission.
