The Apostles and Prophets have made genuinely loving remarks about making certain to understand differences. Most LDS people now speak Spanish and live in a world very different from the squabbles of American politics. Most are very surprised when they venture to Conference or serve missions in the U.S. If someone asks about the hatred toward anyone of any political persuasion other than republican, they are ridiculed. I have served as a senior missionary in Salt Lake City and found attitudes that are polar opposites of the Church leaders.

While there, in a Priesthood meeting, a visitor serving a mission asked about American politics in Utah and it’s hate speech in Church meetings or on hate radio and were consequently, and openly, laughed at. I have been embarrassed by such behavior, even though I am not a U.S. citizen, feeling the insensitivity of the Republican ruling class is so heavily mixed with Church membership.

I agree with your simple anser of “No”. 🙂

D&C 134:9-“We do not believe it just to mingle religious influence with civil government, whereby one religious society is fostered and another proscribed in its spiritual privileges, and the individual rights of its members, as citizens, denied.”

We allow political differences and further believe it is dangerous for a religion to have too much influence over the government as the right of those of other religions may be denied. This happened to us Mormons plenty of times.
